So many calls for submission and events in my various in-boxes lately, I'll just round them up in one post (in no particular order--click the links for more details):
Want to get to know what the Manitoba Writers' Guild is all about? Drop-in time is this Thurs, Jan. 14, 4:30-6:30. It's in the ArtSpace building. Have a coffee, meet some writers.
(I've pretty much missed posting about David Bergen's U of W Convocation Hall reading marking his term as the Carol Shields Writer-in-Residence there--it's today at 12:30 pm)
Did you publish a magazine article in 2009? The National Magazine Awards have a category for student writing, and the deadline is this Friday, Jan. 15.
Novellas (short novels) are a popular Independent Professional Project among students. The Malahat Review has a contest just for novellas, deadline Feb. 1.
Yet another Writer-in-Residence out there: Roberta Kennedy at the U of M, in this case a Writer/Storyteller-in-Residence. A leading Aboriginal performer, Roberta is a member of the Haida nation. Her welcome performance happens Jan. 21, 4:30 pm, in the Student Lounge of the U of M's Aboriginal House.
The Aqua Books Landsdowne Prize for Poetry series continues Jan. 21 (I read at the December edition). This bilingual poetry event features Charles Leblanc, Alison Calder and Maurice Mierau (Winnipeg Public Library Writer-in-Residence).
Speaking of Maurice, he's running a "Self-Editing and Revision" workshop at the Library on Saturday, Jan. 30. Register at 986-6799.
Technical Communications instructor Kevin Longfield produces plays! His company, Theatre Anywhere, is putting on Caryl Churchill and David Lan's A Mouthful of Birds (loosely based on Euripedes' The Bacchae) as part of Churchillfest, the 10th annual Master Playwright Festival. The play runs Feb. 3 to 7 at Studio 320 (in 70 McDermott, above Hooper's).
Rhubarb! If you are under 30 and you or your writing has anything, however tenuous, to do with Mennonite-ness, submit to Rhubarb magazine's "under 30" theme issue. Fiction, poetry, creative non-fiction, or visual art. Deadline Jan. 31.
Another deadline this Friday, Jan. 15: Super Channel's Super Catalyst Emerging Screenwriting Award. Submit your feature-length screenplay, maybe win the chance to have professional help developing it, and make industry contacts while you're at it. And you keep all rights to your script.
More Jan. 15: This Friday is also the deadline for the Geist Literal Literary Postcard Story Contest. It's a 500-word story (max), fiction or non-fiction, but with it you have to send in an actual postcard with some relationship to your story.
My old friends at the Winnipeg Folk Festival are hiring a Resource Development Associate, deadline Jan. 20.
Film Training Manitoba has an upcoming Screenwriting Workshop with Dr. Linda Seger, Feb. 10-14.
Tuesday, Jan. 19, the Aqua Books Soapbox Open Mic Series continues at 7 pm. Get out there and read!
Also at Aqua, the Telling Tales Spoken Lit Concert Series next comes round at 7 pm on Friday, Jan. 22. David Stubel will be reciting from Annie Dillard. Seriously, I haven't heard this guy yet, but I'm told he memorizes books and is amazing.
If you are one my students 19 or under (there might a few), ACI Manitoba has a youth mentorship program, deadline this Monday, Jan. 18. The areas are in Music Marketing/Management/Promotion, Film Making, Writing Fiction and Playwrighting.
This weekend my students are all going to see Theatre Projects Manitoba's In the Chamber: Last Men, Jan. 14-16, 8 pm, Rachel Browne Theatre. Watch the student blogs for reviews of the show.
And I've left out lots of things. There's always lots going on in the world of writing, even in the middle of a Winnipeg January. Wait till National Poetry Month in April, or fall book season in September. My fingers already hurt from all the typing.
